For those who can bear to crawl out of bed at this hour the reward is a riot of birdsong and sightings of even the shyest animals out in the open – like roe deer, red deer, stoats, weasels, foxes and badgers. Early mornings can bring the greatest rewards with magical light and our herds of large herbivores – Exmoor ponies, longhorn cattle and fallow deer – wandering through wreathes of mist. As spring advances you’re likely to hear the liquid song of male nightingales as they try to attract females following them over from Africa, and the purring of turtle doves.
Our Dawn Safari is suitable for everyone – whether professional twitcher, amateur enthusiast or complete beginner. Your guide, who is expert in species identification, will take you to the current hotspots for bird activity. The safari will be approximately 2 hours on foot, taken at a gentle pace, with frequent stops for bird-spotting.
You’ll need a moderate level of fitness and be able to cope with walking on uneven ground. You will most likely visit one of our signature tree-platforms where you can experience the dawn from high in the tree canopy, and a feeding station with a chance to see ravens, buzzards and red kites.
The safari ends with tea, coffee and a bacon roll (made with our Wild Range Tamworth bacon, when available) or a warm croissant and homemade jam.
